Who Are the United Methodists?
The United Methodist Church is one of the largest Protestant denominations in the United States. United Methodism emphasizes the main elements of Christianity:

  • conviction that God has mercy and love for all people
  • belief in a Triune God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit
  • faith in the mystery of salvation through Jesus Christ
  • celebration of the sacraments: Baptism and The Lord's Supper

United Methodists are open to diversity, allowing freedom regarding beliefs that do not strike at the heart of Christian commitment. We believe that God invites us to new insights and understandings along the life-long journey of faith. This means that we respect the views of others whose opinions differ from our own.

Methodism grew out of an 18th century revival of the Church of England, led by John Wesley. Wesley's ministry was primarily one of care for the neglected poor in 18th century England. The movement's emphasis on personal piety and social action have rooted the Church ever since.
